Just a few weeks after undergoing major kidney surgery, American Idol winner Phillip Phillips will headline the July Fourth celebration on the National Mall. The Georgia native, who tells the Associated Press the gig will be his first trip to Washington, will perform on the National Mall for the annual concert that will air on PBS.

"It's probably the biggest thing I've ever done besides American Idol," Phillips told the AP. "I'm just excited to get out there and do my first real live performance since everything that's been going on."

Phillips added that he's feeling good while recovering from surgery, which stemmed from health issues that plagued him during his victorious run on Idol.

"I'm getting better each day, so that's a good thing. I'm just walking around, getting my strength back together," he said. "It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I'm getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit."
