Supernatural (CW, 8 ET/PT) can sometimes get bogged down in its angel war/purgatory mythology — but it also can pull out some very clever pop-culture twists. Take tonight's double play, which opens with the God of Time sending Dean back to 1944 and into an Untouchables-type conflict.

That's followed by Sam and Dean's hunt for the perpetrators of some particularly gruesome attacks, in an episode entitled "The Slice Girls." Which, while not tasteful, does catch your attention.

•Mark Feuerstein worked both in front of and behind the camera for this week's Royal Pains (USA, 9 ET/PT), serving as both star and director.

And just to make his dual roles more complicated, one of the actors he was directing is his father, Harvey Feuerstein. Let's hope he behaved.

•TV history alert. Antenna's run of All in the Family (9 ET/PT) repeats the second season episode that boasted one of the most famous guest shots of all time, as Sammy Davis Jr. visits the Bunker household.

The outing aired when the show was at its peak, which is just one of the reasons its closing kiss became one of the sitcom genre's most indelible images.
