TV tonight: Rita Hayworth films, 'Dallas'
Posted August 7, 2012
• One of the most beautiful women ever to step in front of a camera, Rita Hayworth, rules TCM today. The West Coast gets better prime-time choices: Pal Joey (8 ET/5 PT), Down to Earth (10 ET/7 PT) and Gilda (midnight ET/9 PT).
• TNT's already-renewed Dallas (9 ET/PT) exits with a finale that, no matter how fine it may be, most likely won't capture the attention caused by shooting J.R.
Still, as it leaves, let's thank Dallas for bringing Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy back to TV, while hoping a second season brings them better scripts and co-stars.
• You could rage for hours over all the TV transgressions in the TLC Toddlers & Tiaras spinoff Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (10 ET/PT): its condescending approach to a 6-year-old beauty contestant and her rural family; the shamelessness and social injustice of exploiting a child for cheap entertainment thrills; the damage such shows do to our endangered national sense of empathy.
But let's dwell on the one good thing there is to say about the show: It's on TLC, where no one should expect any better.
So if you watch, at least you can't say you were fooled.
