TV tonight: Gene Kelly salute, 'Burn Notice'
Posted August 22, 2012
•TCM salutes the work of one of the greatest American dancers and film stars of all time, Gene Kelly.
You really can't go wrong all day — and if you're home during the day, check out The Pirate (2:45 p.m. ET/11:45 a.m. PT), a flawed movie that boasts one of his most robust dance numbers, and for Kelly, that's saying something.
Still, TCM has saved the best for the evening: On the Town (6:15 ET/3:15 PT), Cover Girl (8 ET/5 PT), An American in Paris (10 ET/7 PT) — and what may be Hollywood's best original musical ever, Singin' in the Rain (midnight, 9 ET/PT). These are the kind of movies that make you happy you live in the country that made them.
•On the TV front, we say a seasonal goodbye to two popular USA series. Burn Notice (9 ET/PT) wraps up first, followed by Suits (10 ET/PT).
•This also ends the first 10-episode run of Anger Management (FX, 9:30 ET/PT), but never fear: FX has agreed to make 90 more.
However much sense that makes as a business decision, giving that beneficent a blessing to a quickly produced, under-rehearsed, at-best mediocrity is as cynical a creative message as one could possibly send.
