TV tonight: Republican National Convention
Posted August 27, 2012
but not Fox — are scheduled to join PBS and the cable news outlets in covering the Republican National Convention tonight, but not until 10 ET/PT, and only for one hour.
How could they be expected to devote more time to one of the cornerstones of American democracy when they have so many more important things to air, like America's Got Talent (NBC, 8 ET/PT) and MasterChef (Fox, 8 ET/PT)?
And please don't parrot that network nonsense about the conventions not being real newsmaking events anymore, as if their decision to dump them for entertainment programming were motivated by anything but pure profit.
Once every four years the parties try to make their case to the American people. Yes, in many ways the Republican and Democratic conventions have become unpaid political commercials.
Considering all the money the networks' affiliates are raking in from the paid versions, airing a free extended ad with a bit more substance is the least they can do.
We all know they're never going to be made to do the most they can do, which is pay a fair freight for their use of the public airwaves.
