Bruce Hornsby: Red Hook Summer

With his heartland-America, almost Copland-esque approach to pop and jazz, Bruce Hornsby might seem an odd fit for a Spike Lee joint. But Hornsby sets the right tone with a piano-based score that draws from both Isaac Watts hymnody and American jazz. His resonant, open voicings bring a meditative quality to Lee's film about generational reconciliation in a small Baptist church in Brooklyn.
