Elmo pokes gentle fun at fashion

Leave it to a 3 ½-year-old Muppet to poke a few holes in the often pretentious world of fashion.
In a new Web video, Elmo, perhaps the world's only "monsterista," shows a very game Laura Brown from Harper's Bazaar that he's a furry red clothes -- and shoes! -- horse as this "global fashion icon" walks her through his enviable closet, which includes a trench coat, jumpsuit, spacesuit and plain old navy flannel suit.
"I love this one for evening," Brown says, holding up a cream, double-breasted tux.
"It's very Tommy Tune," deadpans Elmo.
"And very Viktor & Rolf, as we say in the biz."
"Really?" says Elmo. "Would they wear halfshirts like that?"
A multicolored unitard is "Comme des Garcons," decrees Brown.
"That's, like, a trapeze outfit," says Elmo.
Brown picks up the monster's black patent, oxfords-esque tap shoes: "All the girls are wearing these kinds of shoes right now."
"And boys," Elmo reminds her.
Brown's assessment? "You're so not even on trend, you're ahead of the trend."
Her favorite part of his footwear collection? His gold winged sneakers. "They're amazing, and they're very Prada spring."
The segment ends with a double-cheeked "fashion kiss, darling." Of course.
