Soul! exhibit invades C-bus
Are there any individual pieces that you're particularly attracted to or would encourage others to watch out for?
That's a tough question. We've got 120 pieces here that we're showing in the main exhibition. The group that speaks to me personally is the linocuts by Valerie Maynard. We've got several of them on exhibit and because they are linocuts, they are all in black and white. They are very detailed, beautifully executed, and the stories behind them are just incredible. She's got one piece that I personally love a lot called Artist Trying to Get It All Down. It shows an artist at work and all of these thoughts, images and ideas coming out of her head. I know what she feels like. I'm not an artist at all but I know what it feels like to try to get ideas into a format that other people can understand. That's one of my favorites but I love all of her things.
There's also some extremely compelling and soul-shaking artwork in the Social Change section. I grew up in the sixties and seventies [but] it's new for me and I'm hoping it'll be new for our visitors as well.
There's also a bronze sculpture called Feral Benga. Floyd Thomas, the gentleman who curated this exhibition at Afro-Am-that's one of his favorite pieces. It's a bronze sculpture of an African dancer. It's beautifully, beautifully executed. That's going to get a lot of attention in the exhibit as well.
