For those not familiar with the story, it follows Jesus during his last days on earth, with the entire play sung to a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack. Originally presented in 1971, with an Oscar-nominated movie adaptation following in 1973, Rice and Webber’s doubt-stricken, love-sick savior -- and the image of drunken apostles at The Last Supper -- ruffled a few conservative feathers.
