Medeski, Martin & Wood play Newport
Medeski, Martin and Wood is a jazz trio, but not in the same way you're used to thinking of jazz. They're kind of like a cross between Thelonius Monk and Phish. They actually received some of their first national attention after playing a show with Phish in 1995.
With John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass guitar, the group proves you don't need a vocalist to put on a great live show. Their sets feature long improvisational solos that remind you of their jazz roots, but their music sounds like a mix of funk, rock, hip-hop, jazz—basically every genre you can think of.
They were in town Sept. 13 to play two sets at Newport Music Hall. Take a look at our photos of the show, then check out some of our other recent concert galleries, featuring acts like Creed, Journey, Modest Mouse and the Rascal Flatts.
