El Acapulco is a hidden delight when it comes to fresh and flavorful Mexican food. It might be easy for some to pass by, tucked into one of the newer little strip malls across the intersection of 71 on Polaris Parkway, but anyone who eats here will come away pleasantly surprised. Mexican cuisine is one of the hardest to do well, and all too often you receive greasy food slathered with cheese, oil and salt. At El Acapulco, tasty doesn't have to be unhealthy, and we think you'll agree that this is an example of Mexican food at its very best. The service is very fast and friendly, and the value is muy excelente!
Food: All of the dishes here are cooked in 100 percent vegetable oil, so even the cheesiest entrée is automatically healthier. The menu offers a nice variety, and you'll be able to find most of your standard favorites. The rice is absolutely the best we've had; seasoned well but not overly greasy or spicy. Lunch specials are priced very fairly at under $7, and no matter when you come, the a la carte menu is a great option if you're on a budget (and the portion sizes are generous for the price). Regardless of what you choose for your main meal, you should try the sweet, crispy sopapillas for dessert.
Libations: You can enjoy a full bar and a variety of drink specials along with your food, and nothing compliments a warm summer day like a pitcher of margaritas or daiquiris on the outdoor patio. Domestic and import beers are available, as well as wine, cocktails, Pepsi products, iced tea and coffee. Happy hour features excellent prices on beer, daiquiris and margaritas from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
Décor: With a large dining room and an outdoor patio, this restaurant offers plenty of space and seating options. The walls are nicely decorated with Mexican murals and art, and mariachi music plays softly in the background. The overall vibe is casual and fun, like a quick vacation south of the border.
Crowd: El Acapulco is still fairly new, so it doesn't get very crowded. We hope this will change as more people find out how fantastic it is. All items on the menu are also available for carry-out.
Service: Family-owned restaurants often seem more appreciative than commercial chains, and El Acapulco was no different. Our server was very friendly and efficient. We enjoyed our meal here, felt comfortable taking our time eating, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The staff smiled and gave us the impression that we were welcome. It was a nice change of pace from bustling restaurants that are too busy to really notice their diners.
Insider's Tip: With Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, now is the perfect time for drink specials and festivities. El Acapulco is celebrating the holiday a little early on Saturday, May 2 (Cinco de Mayo is officially Tuesday, May 5), with a "5 for $9.99" bucket special and $9.99 regular pitchers.
Bottom Line: Support this friendly family business and enjoy an excellent meal that won't hurt your wallet (or your diet).
