The summer is finally approaching, and we're sure you know what that means.

Ice cream!!!!

With the summer months comes that spike in creamery sales due to the body's need to soften the blow of 90-degree temperatures.  We offer our top picks of places that get it right where frozen treats are concerned. Be sure to leave a comment below with your favorite spot, in case we missed it.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, part of Columbus Short North Arts District, is one of the best places in the country to get the frozen treat ... at least according to The New York Times. The small ice cream shop, which prides itself on homemade ice cream and sorbet, landed a nod from the international newspaper. But if you cant take the newspapers word for it, stop by or order online by the pint. Judging by how packed the business is every weekend, you won't be disappointed.

Knight's has been near the corner of Cleveland and Schrock for more than 40 years. You can tell by its design, things have come and gone around it for a long time while the shop has continued to offer its selection of ice cream and homemade milkshakes. Start with a coney dog and end with any of Knight's 50 homemade ice cream flavors.

The high-ceiling store offers a soda-shop type of environment with plenty of tables and a wall of local art. All of Denise's ice creams and sorbets and even the waffle cones are made in-house and can be taken home in pints or gallons.

Johnson's is the home of the ice cream buckeye, a homemade lump of peanut butter ice cream dipped in chocolate. The ice cream shop, which opened for business in 1950, sells 50 flavors of hand-packed ice cream, and it serves fresh fruit sorbets as well as homemade pies and cookies.

With its colorful walk-up exterior, Rocky’s unique desserts feature gelati flavors such as blue raspberry, lemon, fudge bar, passion fruit, mango or pumpkin. Soft ice cream also is available. Rocky’s also offers some fun specials such as Tuesday college night (buy 1, get 1 free) and Friday T-shirt night, when wearing a Rocky’s T-shirt gets you the same deal.
