I stopped by the Gahanna Grill purely by accident, as my intended watering hole was undergoing some minor renovations that day, and thus wasn’t open. The place was moderately busy, so I opted to sit at the bar. The bartender, who came across as very friendly, took my drink order and asked if I wanted a menu. He hustled off for my beer and to fill a couple of incoming drink orders (they have a full bar here), while I looked over the menu. There was a board on one wall listing the day’s “special”, as well as the available soup and a couple of other items. I noted, on the front of the menu and elsewhere, the “State-By-State Guide to 100 Top Burger joints “Hall of Fame” worthy “Beanie Burger. Of course I am always leery of the “World Famous”, “World’s Greatest” and “Hall of Fame” titles, as that sets the bar pretty high, and it often leads to disappointment after such high expectations. So of course I ordered a “Beanie Burger”, medium rare. This really is just a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, sautéed onions and topped with Beanie’s homemade slaw. The burger also comes with fries. For $1.96 more, one can get a “Double Beanie”. It doesn’t say what a “Double Beanie” entails, although I would imagine this would be a “Single Beanie” with a second beef patty and perhaps a second slice of cheese. No word yet as to whether this burger has achieved “Hall of Fame” status, but it listed as being “World Famous”. Finish it (an easy enough feat), and you get your picture “included in the Hall of Fame”, whatever that may be. A Short but reasonable wait later (with plenty of TV’s and a bar to keep you occupied), my food arrived. The burger is served closed-faced on a platter, with a “Kaiser” type bun, an order of fries, and a serving of coleslaw in a lidded Styrofoam container. It also has the aforementioned coleslaw on the burger, just as advertised. Mine came with a piece of lettuce capable of feeding a large, ravenous bunny, a generous portion of sautéed onions, two slices of bacon (in the now mandatory cross pattern) and a slice of perfectly melted American cheese. All of this is served in a basket. The burger is good. It is well seasoned and leaned more towards the medium-well than the medium-rare side. The bun is soft inside, a little firm outside; very nice. I’m not sure that the coleslaw really adds that much to the overall burger experience. I did like the little side of coleslaw, however, as it does better by itself. It is really quite nice and creamy. The fries are OK, but no show stopper going on here either. Overall? It was OK. I’m not sure what made this a “Top 100 U.S. Burger Hall of Famer” (or even where I might find this particular “Hall of Fame”), but it is really just an everyday bar cheeseburger with some reasonable coleslaw. I found it to be a little on the pricey side for what it was. Was it good? Yes. Was it memorably great? No. As I said earlier, “Hall of Fame” status can be a hard standard to live up to.

A Gahanna staple since 1939, the Gahanna Grill is a great place to grab lunch with a friend or co-worker, and then hang out all afternoon on the patio. The Grill closes down at 10 p.m. during the week and 11 p.m. on weekends, but it’s a great place to kick off the night and fill up before hitting some of the bars that stay open later. The menu boasts of signature burgers (the Beanie is a favorite) and service is as fast and friendly as you would expect in a neighborhood bar.
